In June 2018, Alberich announced that it was joining UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund. The decision reflected a simple idea: we have been recovering, recycling and reusing materials since 1900, and we believe that caring for the environment also means caring for the people who live in it, starting with children.
What is UNICEF?
UNICEF is the United Nations agency dedicated to children. It was set up in 1946 and works in more than 190 countries and territories to improve the lives of girls and boys, with a particular focus on their health, education and protection. It is active both in long-term development programmes and in emergencies. You can find out more about its work at unicef.es.
Why did we decide to join?
Our day-to-day work is about the environment: recovering ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, managing waste and carrying out industrial demolition with sustainability in mind. But we didn’t want our commitment to stop there. Millions of people live in disadvantaged circumstances, and children are the most vulnerable.
That is why we decided to get involved in a specific social cause. We share a basic goal with UNICEF: that children can be children, that nobody forces them to grow up before their time and that nobody takes advantage of them. Through our support, we wanted to play our part in bringing that goal closer.
How does it relate to what we do?
A recycling company works with the long term in mind: the resources that will still be available and the environment that future generations will inherit. Supporting an organisation dedicated to children is a consistent way of extending that same reasoning to people. We describe what we do on the environmental side in our commitment to sustainability, and who we are on our About us page.
