Shredded non-ferrous

Shredded non-ferrous metals are neither aluminium nor copper: they are what comes out of the shredder and the post-shredder separation line. They are traded under the international ISRI specifications, which is how the market knows them worldwide, and that is why they have a family of their own.

What we buy

Sources and intake criteria.

They come from our own 4,000 hp shredder and post-shredder separation line, which are fed with complex scrap, end-of-life vehicles, WEEE and industrial equipment.

Intake process
Weighbridge, inspection and primary sorting
Acceptance criteria
  • 01
    Radiation monitoring
Inbound and outbound, with sensors calibrated to local background radiation.
  • 02
    Trade-approved weighing
Certified weighbridge, with a gross/tare/net ticket for every transaction.
  • 03
    Visual inspection
The material is inspected before it is assigned to a lot and graded.
  • 04
    EWC code assignment
The right EWC code (European List of Waste) for the type and origin of the waste.

/ 01
ISRI Zorba
Mixed non-ferrous metal from the shredder

Zorba

A mix of non-ferrous metals from post-shredder eddy current separation. It is mostly aluminium, but it also contains copper, brass, zinc and lead: that’s why it isn’t aluminium, it’s Zorba. Zorba is the international ISRI name for this grade.

Input

Complex scrap, ELVs and WEEE after shredding

Processed grade

Zorba to ISRI specification, uniform size

Industrial applications
  • Secondary metal separation plants
  • International shredded non-ferrous market
  • Feedstock for Twitch and secondary aluminium

ISRI Twitch
Shredded aluminium from dry density separation

Twitch

Twitch comes from Zorba: it is a further processing step in which the aluminium is separated from the other metals in the mix. In our case it is produced by dry density separation. It is the grade that aluminium foundries buy directly.

Input

Zorba processed on the post-shredder separation line

Processed grade

Twitch: high-concentration shredded aluminium

Industrial applications
  • Secondary aluminium refiners and remelters
  • Secondary alloy production
  • International shredded aluminium market

ISRI Zurik
Red metals and stainless steel fraction

Zurik

A non-magnetic fraction rich in red metals (copper and brass) and stainless steel, separated from the shredded non-ferrous stream. It is the grade that complements Zorba and Twitch on the same line.

Input

Non-ferrous stream after the aluminium has been separated

Processed grade

Zurik to ISRI specification

Industrial applications
  • Red metal refineries
  • Further separation of copper and stainless steel
  • International shredded non-ferrous market
