Stainless steel

Stainless steel isn’t traded as a single material: it’s bought and sold by alloy. 304 and 316 aren’t worth the same and don’t go to the same buyers, which is why we treat stainless as a family in its own right rather than as a sub-section of other metals.

What we buy

Sources and intake criteria.

Food-industry vats and tanks, chemical and pharmaceutical equipment, process pipework, mechanical components and architectural structures. A good share comes from our own industrial dismantling projects.

Intake process
Weighbridge, inspection and primary sorting
Acceptance criteria
  • 01
    Radiation monitoring
Inbound and outbound, with sensors calibrated to local background radiation.
  • 02
    Trade-approved weighing
Certified weighbridge, with a gross/tare/net ticket for every transaction.
  • 03
    Visual inspection
The material is inspected before it is assigned to a lot and graded.
  • 04
    EWC code assignment
The right EWC code (European List of Waste) for the type and origin of the waste.

AISI 304 · 18/8
The most common austenitic grade

304 stainless steel

A non-magnetic austenitic chromium-nickel alloy, the most common in the food industry, street furniture and process equipment. It is identified by spectrometry and separated from the 400 series before sale.

Input

Vats, tanks, pipework and food-processing equipment

Processed grade

304 stainless steel graded by spectrometry

Industrial applications
  • Stainless steel mills for remelting
  • Food and drink industry
  • Process equipment and furniture
/ 02
AISI 316 · with molybdenum
Greater chemical resistance thanks to molybdenum

316 stainless steel

An austenitic alloy containing molybdenum, which makes it resistant to chlorides and aggressive environments. It is common in the chemical, pharmaceutical and marine industries, and its recovery value is higher than that of 304 precisely because of the molybdenum.

Input

Reactors, process pipework, chemical equipment

Processed grade

316 stainless steel separated from the other series

Industrial applications
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Marine and highly corrosive environments
  • Special alloy steel mills
/ 03
AISI 430 and alloys
Ferritic grades and niche alloys

400 series and special alloys

400 series (ferritic, magnetic, with chromium but no nickel) and special alloys that turn up in industrial dismantling projects. They are graded separately because their price and destination have nothing to do with those of the 300 series.

Input

Industrial components, household appliances, structures

Processed grade

400 series and special alloys, graded

Industrial applications
  • Ferritic alloy foundries
  • Household appliance and automotive industries
  • Remelting of specific alloys
