What are cookies?
A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you access certain web pages. Among other things, cookies allow a web page to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or their device and, depending on the information they contain and the way in which the device is used, they can be used to recognise the user.
Types of cookies
Depending on the entity that manages them:
- First-party cookies: cookies that are sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself, from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: cookies that are sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
Depending on how long they remain active:
- Session cookies: cookies designed to collect and store data while the user is accessing a web page.
- Persistent cookies: a type of cookie in which the data remain stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the party responsible for the cookie, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
Depending on their purpose:
- Technical cookies: cookies that allow the user to browse a web page, platform or application and to use the different options or services available on it.
- Personalisation cookies: cookies that allow the user to access the service with certain predefined general features based on a series of criteria in the user’s terminal.
- Analytics cookies: cookies that allow the party responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of the users of the websites to which they are linked.
